Asafoetida (Ferula foetida) medicinal herb also referred to as asafetida is a plant that is native to Iran, Afghanistan as well as Pakistan.  It is cultivated in near proximity to India.  It is a perennial plant that is often used instead of garlic or onion and it is from the Umbelliferae family.  It is has a very high pungent odor and a bitter taste and should be used sparingly.  Some of us country folks would refer to it as "smell bad." 

The common names are Asafetida, Asant, Devil's dung, Food of the gods, Stinking gum, Giant fennel and Hing.  The primary part used as herbal medicine is the Oleo gum resin taken from the root by making a groove or deep cut in it to release the resin.

The main constituents of asafetida are the resin, volatile oil and coumarins which is responsible for blood thinning.  The medicinal properties are analgesic, aromatic, antiseptic, nervine, anticoagulant, digestive, expectorant, laxative, vermifuge, sedative, antispasmodic and carminative.

Health benefits of asafoetida

The health benefits of asafetida include the treatment of swine flu (H1N1), bronchitis, whooping cough (pertussis), asthma and other respiratory conditions.  It is used as herbal remedy for gas (flatulence) and other digestive conditions, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), high cholesterol and hoarse and sore throats.

Its medicinal uses is extend to many ailments.  It is good to use topically for calluses and corns, toothache, cancer, leucorrhoea and it will aid in bringing on menstruation that failed to show up each month.  It is also a good alternative medicine for sterility and diabetes.

Anyone suffering from mental ailments?  Then asafetida medicinal herb can treat these conditions including depression, anxiety, hysteria, nervousness as well as insanity.  It is also a good remedy for children's conditions.

Not to be outdone, this medicinal herb is not only used in foods but it is also an ingredient in beverages and cosmetics despite its taste and odor.

Dosage

For children who are suffering with gas, a pinch of this herb in combination with a bit of coconut oil may be used as a rub on the stomach of the child.  Also, place a pinch of asafetida in a glass of water and consume to relieve gas.

A dosage of two teaspoonfuls of  this medicinal herb combines with two teaspoonfuls of onion juice along with two teaspoonful of honey.  Take this dose of asafoetida three times per day and it will aid in the various ailments.
