My grandmother practiced herbal wound treatment remedy

My grandmother practiced herbal wound treatment remedy for as long as I can remember. This was home remedy for all of us in the household. Slippery elm and Aloe Vera were two top herbs that were used to treat wounds.

Older folks, who are nostalgics when it comes to healing folklore are always ready to perform the natural process of the ancient days.  I got hooked on these remedies as well.

  • Aloe Vera comprises of mixtures that will ease inflammation, soreness of wounds and swelling. Apply this medicinal herb to the wound after a thorough cleansing of the area to avoid bacteria.  The clear gel of the aloe can achieve healing for minor wounds, cuts and scrapes. Scrape or squeeze out the gel and apply to the affected area. Apply three times per day for fast healing.

We have been using aloe vera gel for many years.  That was our            main remedy used by my older folks. Every minor wounds,                    cuts and scrapes, you can rest assured that aloe would be used.

  • Slippery elm is a well-known herb to be used to heal wounds. It is more convenient to use in powder form.  It should never be placed in an open wound but instead be placed around the edge of the wound.

As children we were continuously running, whether on our way to school or just making an errand to the community shop. It was a part of our daily lives. That is one of the reasons we have so many great athletes in Jamaica.  The running continues to this present moment.

However, accidents did happen, and we would end up with bruises, wounds, cuts and scrapes.  So, herbal wound treatment remedy would come into play with my grandmother, who gathered special herbs to make into a poultice for bruises and wounds.  Various leaves and roots were used for poultices.  Today, many persons continue to find healing in these medicinal herbs.

This was always welcome comparing to the harshness and stinging sensation we felt from chemical drugs when they were administered.
