Marjoram (Origanum Vulgare) medicinal herb is a plant that is native to the Mediterranean and it is from the Labiatae family.  It has a subtle flavor and aroma, best described as being in the middle ground between oregano and thyme.  It is similar to oregano in taste and appearance, but it has a sweeter taste.

The name of it is a Greek word which means "Joy of the Mountain" and ancient Greeks had the belief that if this plant grew on a grave then that dead person would enjoy eternal happiness. It is therefore known to some as the "herb of happiness."  It is a relative to the mint family and the entire plant may be used as herbal medicine. This medicinal herb has healing properties and is one of the rare herbs whose flavor intensifies when dried.

It is good with beef dishes, such as meat loaves, stews and soups. The fresh or dried flowering tops contain a volatile oil and it is traditionally used in Italian, French, North African, Middle Eastern, and American cuisine.

The common names are Sweet and Knotted marjoram as well as Marjorana hortensis.  The entire plant can be used.  The medicinal properties are emmenagogue, expectorant, anagesic, nervine, laxative, antioxidant, aromatic, sedative, tonic and antispasmodic.

Benefits of the tea

The tea will help in breaking the habit of smoking. Add one teaspoon to a cup of boiling water, let it sit until it is cool enough to drink it. There is no need to add sweetening as this herb is already sweet.

The tea, however, will make the throat dry, which is ideal for smokers to stop smoking. A dry throat will make smoking very uncomfortable. Therefore, a cup of the tea a day will make smokers smoke less and they will eventually break the habit.

The tea also will also help to regulate the monthly menstruating cycle.  Drinking the tea will also ease ailments such as hay fever, indigestion, sinus congestion, asthma, stomach upset, headache, dizziness, coughs, colds, and disorders associated with the nervous system.
